Travel Tips – Wildlife

In: Blog

Scotland is home to a wide variety of wildlife and our tours provide lots of opportunities to see our native animals and, if you’re lucky, catch them on film.

We don’t want you to miss these opportunities for incredible lasting memories, so we’ve scoured the internet, asked some experts and used some common sense to come up with our Wildlife Photography Tips:

  1. Research the animals you really want to see. Deer, birds of prey, highland cattle, dolphins, seals are all common in Scotland. Understand how they typically behave and you’ll be in a great position to get that shot.
  2. Remember you’re probably in the animal’s world – respect its habitat with minimal disturbance and you’ll increase your chances of a good image
  3. Learn the ‘rule of thirds’. It’s basic stuff but it helps. Your camera probably has a ‘grid’ setting built in.
  4. Use your camera’s features – you’ll be surprised what it can do, even if it is just your smartphone.
  5. Share your images and get feedback – a small edit can sometimes transform a good image into a great one.
  6. Timing can be important. The ‘golden hour’ is just before sunset when the sun is lower in the sky. This means the light has to travel through more of the Earth’s atmosphere, giving it a golden glow.

Failing all of the above, snap away to your heart’s content and enjoy having a laugh at your complete ineptitude. That’s what we do.
