What Are the Best Castles to Visit in Scotland?

In: Blog, Castles

Scotland and castles go hand in hand. With over two thousand dotted across the country, from rugged ruins to royal residences, it can be hard to know where to begin. But if you’re exploring Scotland with Discover Scotland Tours, you’re already one step ahead, we take you to some of the most beautiful and iconic castles in the country.

Whether you’re chasing history, dramatic views or a bit of film-star glamour, these are the castles we think deserve a place on your must-visit list.

Eilean Donan Castle

Location: From Edinburgh or Glasgow | View Castle Tours

Eilean Donan Castle is one of Scotland’s most recognisable landmarks — and for good reason. Sitting on its own small island at the meeting point of three lochs, it looks like something straight out of a fairytale. And, in many ways, it is.

With a history that dates back to the 13th century, Eilean Donan has seen battles, rebuilding and rebirth. It was once a stronghold for the Clan Mackenzie and has become a symbol of Highland strength and pride.

You might also recognise it from the big screen. It has featured in a number of films, including The World Is Not Enough and Highlander. But nothing beats seeing it in real life, with the mountains rising in the background and the tide gently washing around its stone walls.

We visit Eilean Donan Castle on several of our Highland tours, including the Isle of Skye day tours and multi-day options. There’s plenty of time to take photos, cross the famous bridge, and explore the castle’s rooms and exhibitions.

Scottish Castles

Stirling Castle

Location: From Edinburgh or Glasgow | View Castle Tours

Few places in Scotland are as closely tied to the country’s royal past as Stirling Castle. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Forth, this was once the favoured residence of Scottish kings and queens — including Mary, Queen of Scots, who spent much of her childhood here.

It’s easy to see why it was considered a seat of power. The views stretch for miles, and the castle itself is filled with regal grandeur, from the Great Hall to the Royal Palace. You can walk through history here, guided by costumed interpreters and award-winning exhibitions that bring the Renaissance court to life.

Stirling Castle is featured on our Loch Lomond, Kelpies and Stirling Castle day tour, which gives you time to explore the castle at your own pace. It’s the perfect introduction to Scotland’s royal history and a must for anyone interested in the country’s past.

Doune Castle

Location: From Edinburgh or Glasgow | View Castle Tours

If you’re a fan of film or television, Doune Castle might look strangely familiar. That’s because it has stood in for everything from Castle Leoch in Outlander to Winterfell in Game of Thrones and even the setting for Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

But beyond the cameras, Doune is a genuinely fascinating medieval stronghold. Built in the late 14th century, it has one of the best-preserved great halls in Scotland and offers a real sense of what castle life might have been like.

Our tours that visit Loch Lomond and the Trossachs often stop at Doune, and it’s a highlight for anyone who enjoys a good mix of history, storytelling and a little humour. The audio guide, narrated by Monty Python’s Terry Jones, adds a quirky twist to your visit.

Doune Castle

Inveraray Castle

Location: From Edinburgh or Glasgow | View Castle Tours

Set on the shores of Loch Fyne, Inveraray Castle is the seat of the Clan Campbell and still a working family home. Its fairytale towers and sweeping gardens make it one of the prettiest castles in Scotland, but it’s more than just a pretty face.

Inside, you’ll find a rich collection of armoury, tapestries, fine furniture and family heirlooms that span centuries. The castle grounds are equally impressive, offering forest walks, peaceful gardens and lovely views over the loch.

Inveraray Castle is included in our day tours from Glasgow to Oban, Lochs and Inveraray. It’s a great way to combine coastal views, Highland hospitality and a visit to one of Scotland’s most charming castles.
