The Jacobite Steam Train

Scotland’s most famous rail journey — from Fort William to Mallaig across the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Choose from Highland tours featuring the Glenfinnan Viaduct or arrange a private journey to Fort William to board the Jacobite Steam Train.

The Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig

The Jacobite Steam Train is one of the world’s most celebrated heritage rail journeys, running seasonally between Fort William and the west coast fishing port of Mallaig. Travelling along part of the historic West Highland Line, the route passes lochs, mountains and open Highland landscapes shaped by centuries of history.

Usually hauled by a traditional steam locomotive, the train crosses the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct — a 21-arch engineering landmark overlooking Loch Shiel. Its sweeping curve through the glen has made it instantly recognisable around the world, particularly to fans of the Harry Potter films. On occasion, services may be operated by a diesel locomotive in line with the railway operator’s operational requirements.

The 84-mile round trip journey showcases some of Scotland’s most dramatic scenery, including views towards Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, as well as Loch Eilt and the silver sands near Morar. Large carriage windows and a relaxed pace allow passengers to fully appreciate the landscape.

Operating from spring to autumn, the Jacobite Steam Train is an independently run heritage railway experience. Tickets must be booked directly with the train operator, and availability can be limited during peak months.

The Journey & the Route

Glenfinnan Viaduct

One of the most celebrated moments of the journey is the crossing of the Glenfinnan Viaduct. This 21-arch structure curves dramatically above Loch Shiel, framed by Highland peaks and open sky. The train slows as it passes across the viaduct, offering panoramic views that have become instantly recognisable worldwide.

Lochs & Coastal Scenery

Beyond Glenfinnan, the route threads through some of the West Highlands’ most striking landscapes. The line passes Loch Eilt, often mirrored with reflections of surrounding hills, before continuing towards the silver sands of Morar and the Atlantic coastline. Changing light and shifting weather create ever-evolving views throughout the journey.

Fort William Departure

The journey begins in Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. Departing from the town’s railway station, the train joins the historic West Highland Line — a route widely regarded as one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world.

Mallaig & West Coast Views

At the western end of the line lies Mallaig, a working fishing port overlooking the Isle of Skye. Passengers typically have time to explore the harbour, enjoy fresh seafood, or watch ferries depart for the Small Isles before the return journey to Fort William.

Seeing the Train Without Riding It

For many visitors, watching the Jacobite Steam Train cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct is just as memorable as travelling on board. The elevated viewpoint above the viaduct offers panoramic views across Loch Shiel and the surrounding Highland peaks, making it one of Scotland’s most photographed locations.

Between April and October, the train typically crosses the viaduct once in the morning and once in the afternoon, although exact times vary by season and are subject to operational changes. Arriving early is recommended during peak months, as the viewpoint can become busy.

Several of our scheduled Highland tours include time at Glenfinnan to witness the famous crossing and explore the surrounding monument and lochside scenery — without the need to secure train tickets.

Private Jacobite Steam Train Experiences

While our scheduled tours do not include travel on the Jacobite Steam Train itself, it is possible to incorporate the journey into a bespoke private itinerary.

Private tours can be arranged with transport to and from Fort William, allowing you to board the train for its scenic journey to Mallaig and return. As tickets are managed directly by the railway operator and subject to availability, we recommend booking well in advance during peak season.

A private Highland itinerary also allows flexibility around departure times, scenic stops and overnight stays, creating a relaxed way to experience both the train journey and the wider landscapes of the West Highlands.
