Highland Lochs, Glens & Castles Private Tour

On our private Highland tour we will take you to some of the best scenery Scotland has to offer. Majestic mountains tumble down to shimmering lochs and castles, while glens tell tragic tales of centuries gone by.

History enthusiasts will have the opportunity to visit, not one but two historic Castles. From picturesque gardens to battered battlements they have very different stories to tell. Immerse yourself in Scotland’s past and relive some of the experience of their time.

We personalise our private tours to the interests of the group on board. This tour can depart from both Glasgow and Edinburgh providing flexible options on where your adventure may begin.

Departing Glasgow or Edinburgh on our private highland tour we will head north. We’ll pass Stirling Castle, home to many Royals including the Stuart Kings and Mary Queen of Scots. Did you know she was only 6 years old when she took the throne in 1542? Our highland adventure begins at Doune Castle, a 14th century castle. It may be familiar to you as it stars as both Castle Leoch in Outlander and Winterfell in Game of Thrones. It also features as Swamp Castle, Castle Anthrax and Camelot in the 1975 comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

We will then continue through the Trossachs National Park, passing the Highland town of Callander before we reach Loch Lubnig. Nestled between 2 mountains: Ben Ledi and Ben Vane, it’s a beautiful small loch with striking views. We’ll enjoy the scenery and also have time for some light refreshments here.

Travelling north we continue onwards to Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle which stands at its head. This 15th century ruined castle certainly catches the eye and is a perfect photo stop. After that, it’s onwards to the 18th century town of Inveraray. This own was built by the chief of Clan Campbell, the 3rd Duke of Argyll, with the castle still owned by their family. Situated on a sea loch, Loch Fyne, the town is very picturesque and makes a great lunch spot. You’ll have 2 hours here therefore you may choose to take in an attraction during your visit too. You could opt to visit Inveraray Castle. With its interesting history and beautiful gardens, it’s certainly a popular choice. It’s open to the public April – October and there are also private castle tours available throughout the 2020 season too. With your own personal castle guide, the private tours are a great option for those looking for a more in depth experience.

On the other hand, maybe Inveraray Jail (open all year round) may suit your interests more. The jail was used in the 19th century and provides a great interactive experience of what life would have been like for the prisoners. Others may instead choose to just explore the town and take a short walk. There are certainly plenty of options to suit everyone.

Saying goodbye to Inveraray it’s then only a short drive to the ‘Rest and be Thankful. Built in 1753 for the military, the weary soldiers carved these words on a stone where the viewpoint now rests. Aptly promoting you to enjoy the view. You’ll have time to take some photographs here. Finally, we will visit the quaint village of Luss for our last stop of the day. St Kessog an Irish missionary brought Christianity to this area 1500 years ago when he spent time in Luss. A church now sits in this location, with a Viking Hog Back grave in its grounds to remind us of the area’s rich history. The church overlooks the banks of Loch Lomond where you can take a stroll and enjoy the mountain views. You’ll also see Ben Lomond, the highest Munro in the area if you look to the North East. We will then travel back to Glasgow or Edinburgh where your tour will end.
